John Rains planted the first vineyards in the region back in the mid-19th Century. Remnants of the once prosperous wine industry can be seen around the city.
The Thomas Winery at the corner of Vineyard Avenue and Foothill Boulevard is gone, but the corner still is marked with a wine cask. The Virginia Dare center at the corner of Foothill and Haven Avenue was built in the style of its namesake, the Virginia Dare Winery. The San Sevaine Homeowners Association maintains a private vineyard used to produce wine for its members. Many other homeowners in the city also have planted grapes in backyards, continuing the tradition John Rains started a century and a half ago.
